Bi-Fold Driveway Gates in Melbourne: The Smart Fit for Short Driveways

If you have ever stood at the end of a short Melbourne driveway and wondered how a gate could possibly fit, you're not alone. Many homes across the inner and eastern suburbs, from period homes in Camberwell and Hawthorn to new townhouses in Brunswick and Box Hill, have very little room between the footpath and the garage. A standard swing gate needs a big arc to open. A sliding gate needs a long stretch of fence to slide behind. A bi-fold gate needs neither.

Bi-fold driveway gates are one of our specialties at Latitude Fencing & Gates. They take real care to design, build and install well, and not many fencing companies take them on. In this guide we explain how they work, when they make sense, and what to think about before you choose one.

What Is a Bi-Fold Driveway Gate?

A bi-fold gate is a swing gate that folds in half as it opens. Each side is made from two hinged leaves. As the gate opens, the leaves fold back on themselves like a concertina door, so the gate swings through a much smaller arc than a standard swing gate of the same width.

Most bi-fold driveway gates are built as a pair, one folding set on each side of the opening, which gives you a wide, clear opening for the car. Single-sided bi-fold gates are also possible where the site suits.

Why Choose a Bi-Fold Gate for Your Driveway?

Short driveways and cars parked close to the gate

This is the big one. Because the leaves fold, a bi-fold gate needs much less room behind it than a swing gate. If your car parks just inside the gate, or your driveway is short, a bi-fold gate can open without hitting the car or the house.

No long run of fence needed for sliding

A sliding gate needs space along the fence line, roughly as wide as the opening, for the gate to slide back. On narrow blocks, corner sites or frontages with a letterbox, pier or tree in the way, that space often isn't there. A bi-fold gate stays within the opening.

Sloping driveways

Driveways that rise up from the street can make a swing gate scrape the ground as it opens. With shorter leaves, a bi-fold gate is easier to plan around a slope. We check the levels carefully at the site measure.

A clean, modern look

Bi-fold gates can be built to match your front fence, so the whole frontage reads as one design. Vertical blades, flat slats, horizontal slats and other aluminium and steel styles can all be used.

Can Bi-Fold Gates Be Automated?

Yes. Automating a bi-fold gate is a popular choice, because it means you can open and close the gate from the car with a remote. The motor and arms are matched to the size and weight of the leaves, and we plan the automation together with the gate design so everything fits and runs smoothly. We can also talk you through access options such as remotes, keypads and intercoms.

Why Bi-Fold Gates Need an Experienced Builder

A bi-fold gate has more moving parts than a standard gate. Every hinge, leaf and post has to be square and strong, or the gate can sag, drag or fold unevenly over time. That's why it pays to choose a team that does this kind of work regularly.

At Latitude, we design, fabricate and install our gates in-house. Each bi-fold gate is built to measure in our Melbourne workshop and installed by our own team, so the person who plans your gate is working with the people who build and fit it. Our steel and aluminium fencing and gates come with a 5-year workmanship warranty.

Choosing the Right Style for Your Home

The best bi-fold gate is one that suits your home and fence. A few popular options:

  • Vertical blades: slim upright profiles with a modern, architectural look. See our aluminium vertical blade fencing.

  • Horizontal slats: 50 x 10 mm aluminium slats welded on the wide face for a flat slat look with small, even gaps. See our horizontal slat fences.

  • Blade style: the same slats welded on the narrow face for wider gaps and more light and airflow.

  • Mixed materials: gates designed to sit between rendered or brick piers and match an existing front fence.

Bi-Fold Driveway Gates: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bi-fold driveway gate cost?

Every bi-fold gate is custom made, so we quote after a free site measure. The width of the opening, the material and style, the driveway slope and whether you want automation all affect the price. We'll walk you through the options when we visit.

Is a bi-fold gate better than a sliding gate?

It depends on your site. A sliding gate is a great choice when there's plenty of room along the fence for the gate to slide back. A bi-fold gate is often the better fit when that room isn't there and the driveway is too short for a standard swing gate. We'll recommend the best option after seeing your property.

Can a bi-fold gate work on a sloping driveway?

Often, yes. Shorter leaves make slopes easier to manage than with a full-width swing gate. We check the levels at the site measure and design the gate to suit.

Can you automate an existing manual gate?

Sometimes. It depends on the gate's condition, construction and hinges. We can assess it on site and tell you whether automation is a good idea or whether a new gate would serve you better.

Do you install bi-fold gates across Melbourne?

Yes. We design, build and install driveway gates for homes across Melbourne. Get in touch and we'll arrange a time to measure up.
